THE MILAS ATATURK SPORTS CENTRE

The Milas Sports Hall and City Park is conceived as a combined civic and recreational hub, bringing together a modern indoor arena with a public landscape in a single, integrated scheme. Located along a key urban axis and positioned at the head of a natural wind corridor, the project responds directly to Milas’s hot climate through passive environmental strategies.

The design separates the sports hall and administrative functions into distinct volumes, allowing for clarity of circulation and efficient operation during large-scale events. Spectators and athletes are accommodated through dedicated entrance routes at different levels, ensuring smooth movement and safe evacuation. Elevated terraces, external staircases and direct connections to the surrounding park further reinforce the building’s accessibility and public character.

Environmental performance is central to the scheme. Open ground-level voids and transitional spaces act as natural ventilation channels, drawing prevailing north–south breezes through the site. Deep overhangs, shaded walkways and lightweight façades mitigate solar gain, while a translucent polycarbonate envelope to the arena provides diffuse daylight without glare.

Structurally, the main arena is expressed as a lightweight steel system spanning over exposed concrete supports, maximising flexibility and visual openness. In contrast, the administrative block is conceived as a more solid reinforced concrete volume, screened to reduce western sun exposure.

By merging sport, landscape and climate-responsive design, the project establishes a new civic landmark for Milas one that supports both everyday use and international events while offering a calm, shaded and well-ventilated public environment.
